Have you ever seen that episode of Friends where Monica tries to recreate Phoebe’s mom’s famous chocolate chip cookie recipe?
That happened to me. When I was a freshman in college, everyone had to take Speech 101. Or maybe it was called something fancier. Anyway, one of the speeches we had to give was a ‘descriptive speech’ telling people how to do something. Surprisingly enough, I chose to cook something. I made these chocolate chip cookies, which are my absolute favorite, and I’ve been making them forever. Literally, ask my mom. She’s been yelling at me to clean up after these cookies for years. Sorry, mom!
Anyway, part of the speech was to write an accompanying recipe, which I did.
Fast forward four years. I am in law school and had completely forgotten about this whole incident. I get a text from a friend who was in that class. He said that it was also his favorite cookie recipe, but he had lost it and wanted me to give it to him again. I had to tell him, much like the episode of Friends, the recipe was the one on the back of the bag of chocolate chips.
Anyway, this recipe turns out perfectly every time. Cold butter? It’s ok. Accidentally put in baking powder and not soda? Not perfect, but delicious. Forget the baking soda entirely and remember halfway through and have to add it to the stiff batter with a fork? It’s forgiving.
Time: 1.5 hour (active 20-30 minutes)
Difficulty – easy
- 1/2 cup butter (2 sticks), softened
- 3/4 cup white sugar
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 1/4 cup flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 bag chocolate chips
- (optional) 1 cup walnuts
- Preheat the oven. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Cream the butter and sugar. Whip the butter until its softened and paler. Add the sugar, and mix until dissolved. If you take a pinch of dough between two fingers, you shouldn’t be able to feel sugar. Add the eggs, and mix until combined.
- Prepare the dry ingredients. In a seperate bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, and salt. Add to the wet mixture, until just combined. Then, add the chocolate chips, and mix until they are equally spread out. If you are having walnuts,
- Bake. Taking two tablespoons, mound the dough out on a cookie sheet. Make sure they are well-spread out. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until spread a little bit and the edges are golden brown. Serve, and enjoy!
